“Mizuki Shigeru Road” is the street with the motifs of cartoonist Shigeru Mizuki and various yokai goblins which he has been producing in his works such as “Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro.” Sakaiminato is the hometown of Shigeru Mizuki where has significant effect on his interest for yokai goblins in his childhood.
The detailed bronze statues of yokai characters and the shops associated with yokai goblins always welcome you.
The street is about 800-meter long (15 minutes’ walk) from the front of JR Sakaiminato station to Honmachi arcade.
Wheelchair users can walk at ease on sidewalks, which are set on both sides of the street.
A guidebook written in Braille can be lent out for visually impaired travelers.
Studded paving block is set on sidewalks surface, and also acoustic traffic signals are set at main intersections of the street.
Next to the station, you can visit “Sakaiminato Exchange Terminal,” which has information center and ferry boating point to Oki island.
Also, near the street, a number of stuffed fishes and crabs welcome you at “Sea and Life Museum,” called waterless aquarium, and you will feel the atmosphere of yokai goblins’ world at “Mizuki Shigeru Museum.”
